Jan's Journal
Courage. Risk. We associate these two words with leadership. Leaders often show courage by taking unpopular stands. They are inevitably risk takers. The leadership of LT is no exception.
Last week, the LT Board took the courageous step of raising LT's tuition for the first time in five years. They also agreed to reduce class size from its current 80 participants down to 72. It's a risky proposition. Although we have
been fortunate with an abundance of applications so far, the number could go down. Requests for scholarships could go up.
The rationale for the increased tuition and decreased class size was well thought out. Tuition for the program has remained flat, putting more demand on raising funds from corporations and individuals. Compared to other community
leadership programs across the nation in similar-sized markets, LT's tuition is one of the lowest and its class size one of the highest. By raising tuition, our leadership is showing confidence in the program's value and sending a strong
message to funders regarding the Board's willingness to act in a responsible (and courageous) manner, with regard to the organization's finances. Finally, a class size reduction of eight people will make a significant difference in the
quality of the experience for the participants.
Now it's your turn to help. In order to keep our application numbers strong, we rely on all of you for your candidate referrals. Help us spread the word about LT! We need your referrals, as many as
possible. Who knows, there might even be a prize for the person who sends in the most! To refer candidates please

Thanks to the success of our 25th Anniversary celebration and all of you, our scholarship fund is healthy. If you know someone who is interested in applying but concerned about the cost, be sure to let them know that we have scholarship
funds available to those who are employed by the non-profit or public sector, self-employed, or not employed. The cost of the program should not keep someone from applying!
I am proud of our Board's willingness to show courage and take a risk in a challenging economic climate. Help LT send them your message of support by sending us your candidate referrals now! You are our greatest resource and we thank
you.

A View from the Class of 2010 |
All of the Challenge Days have given me new perspectives on what a Healthy Community looks like and I have enjoyed hearing other classmates' opinions about these critical issues. I feel the most important experience for me so far is that
the LT classes are not about the "result" but the "process." For example, the process of getting to know our teammates, learning how to build consensus, and making sure all voices are heard. We are also a group of people who have great
creativity. I was most impressed with every groups' performance on the Arts and Culture Challenge Day. By far, that was my favorite day. Our Mid-Year Retreat on Race is coming up in a few days, and I look forward to the exchange of our
thoughts and ideas.
Megumi Kobayashi, LT Class of 2010

Second Conversation a hit! |
Thanks to Howard Behar, former President of Starbucks Coffee Company North America, Starbucks Coffee International, and author of "It's Not About the Coffee, Leadership Principles from a Life at Starbucks," the second "Conversations with
Leaders Series" was a smashing success. We had close to 85 attendees who were truly inspired by Howard's personal stories and candor about his experiences at Starbucks. One person commented that Howard was "thought provoking and
inspiring." Another noted "great subject and delivery," and a third remarked, "a good reminder of what's important."
Stay tuned for the third conversation in the series coming up in the next few months.
