Jan's Journal

The older I get, the more quickly time seems to pass. It's already December and I don't have a clue as to how that happened! Downtown Seattle is all lit up with its holiday cheer, the LT'10 class is in full swing, and life seems busier than ever.

At this time of year, as I begin to reflect, the word "gratitude" is top of mind. When I think about work, I realize how grateful I am to have a job I love, and extraordinary people to work with. The LT staff members are the best! Every day they go above and beyond to serve our organization and all of you. How did I get so lucky?

Then there are our volunteers. More than 150 volunteers put in countless hours to maintain LT's high quality. We have an incredibly committed Board, a Curriculum Committee that dedicates their time to designing superb programs, and an Alumni Leadership Committee that is working hard to engage all of you in our activities. Beyond that, our Marketing and Recruitment Committee is putting plans in place to ensure we remain visible and have continued success at candidate recruitment, our Resource Development Committee is making sure we have the funds needed to operate the program, and our Evaluation Committee is actually finding ways to measure LT's impact in the region. There are countless others as well; those committee members who work when we most need them, the many speakers who share their wisdom with the LT class members, the lab team advisors; I could go on and on, but you get the idea. Being grateful doesn't begin to cover the way I feel about the people who "staff" LT without any compensation. They are invaluable!

On a more personal note, I am grateful for my family and friends. I'm grateful to have a job, a place to live, and food for the table. At a time when so many people are unemployed, some living on the streets, and others just plain hungry, I am grateful for the abundance of riches in my life. All of you are part of that abundance. I wish you a joyous holiday season and all the best in 2010.

Give $27 for 27 Years!
What can you buy for $27? A new scarf? A magazine subscription? Lunch for two? How about playing a part in sustaining Leadership Tomorrow so that strong leadership can continue to be nurtured and developed for our region?

In this, our 27th year, we are asking you, our alumni, to give $27one dollar for each year of LT's phenomenal work in this community. There are currently more than 1,400 graduates, most of whom are living and working in this region. Less than 30% are currently making annual gifts to LT. Will you help us raise that percentage? $27 may not seem like it will make a difference, but we assure you, when each person decides to give, it adds up quickly. Thank you for your support. Click here to make your gift.

Ashoka Event Huge Success!
Over 100 LT alumni and friends turned out for the rare opportunity to hear Bill Drayton, Chairman & CEO of Ashoka, Innovators for the Public. Also in attendance were members of Ashoka/Youth Venturers, whose presence reminded us all why Bill started this work.

Bill was asked, after all the great things that he had accomplished, what continued to drive him? His response resonated with attendees when he spoke humbly about the importance of love and being connected in a compassionate way to what we all strive to do to create a better world.

It isn't often that we have the opportunity to hear from a true visionary. It was, in every sense of the word, inspiring.

Thanks to Paul Shoemaker, Executive Director of Social Venture Partners, who, because of his outstanding interview skills, was able to create a comfortable environment for Bill to share his experience and wisdom. Thanks also to the Seattle Times who generously provided their space for the event, and to our co-presenters, Social Venture Partners and City Club.

Become a Fan of Leadership Tomorrow
Two years ago, Leadership Tomorrow joined Facebook. Today, 154 members of the LT community have joined our Fan Page, but we know we're still missing many of you. If you're not yet connected, please join us online at www.Facebook.com/LeadershipTomorrow.

Why a Facebook Fan Page? More than 350 million people are using Facebook as a way to connect in a real-time conversation and share information. The Fan Page is a great place for us to continue to build the LT community, plan events, and even recruit the next class of LT-ers.

The Fan Page was created by a volunteer committee as a resource for you. We hope you'll join the conversation by adding an update to the wall, sharing an LT photo or an interesting link, starting a discussion, inviting people to an LT event you're organizing, or just visiting the page to find other LT-ers. If you have a suggestion or idea for the LT social media volunteer committee, please contact Shauna Causey at ShaunaCausey@comcast.net.

Why Should You Support
Leadership Tomorrow?
Why give to Leadership Tomorrow? LT is an exceptionally well-run organization. It operates with the leanest staff possible and keeps its budget down by relying on more than 150 extraordinary volunteers who donate their time and expertise to LT as board members, trainers, speakers, curriculum designers, and more. Until recently, nearly 70% of LT's annual expenses were covered by tuition. The balance was raised through gifts from sponsors, foundations and a small number of individuals. This situation has changed. LT must rely on contributions to pay in excess of 40% of our expenses. And, in these troubled economic times, we struggle merely to maintain the historic level of support from corporations and foundations. We must rely increasingly on gifts from our family of LT Alums and Supporters. Please click here to donate now.
